23 Apr Expanding Hope

At Ronald McDonald House Charities of Charleston, our mission has always been to keep families close to the care their children need – and now, we’re growing to serve even more families than ever before.
We’re thrilled to announce a transformative expansion of our House: a five-story addition that will allow us to nearly triple our capacity and offer families even more comfort, privacy, and support during an incredibly difficult time.
We’re breaking ground in June 2025. This expansion will add 46 new bedrooms with private bathrooms, bringing our total number of rooms across both buildings to 70 bedrooms after renovations. These additional rooms mean more families can stay together without worrying about where they’ll sleep or how they’ll afford accommodations near the hospital.
But this expansion isn’t just about space – it’s about creating a true “Home-away-from-home.” The new House will feature:
- A large shared kitchen
- Kitchenettes on every floor
- Laundry rooms
- Separate playrooms for different age groups
- A classroom
- Serenity room for quiet reflection and rest
- and more!
Every detail has been thoughtfully designed with the needs of our families in mind, from cozy common areas to quiet spaces that offer a moment of peace.
The demand for our services continues to grow. In 2024, we turned away 457 families, and as Charleston’s medical community at MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital expands and families travel from all across the Southeast and beyond for care, this new building ensures we never have to turn away a family due to lack of space.
In just 16 months of construction, we’ll go from the vision of expansion to opening our doors to even more families, providing comfort, care, and community when they need it most.
This is the future of RMHC Charleston, and we’re building it together.
