Lights Of Love

Be the light for our families

RMHC Charleston’s signature holiday event brings the light of hope and love to families. We believe that no child should have to fight a serious illness without their family nearby, especially during the holidays.

Meet Walker – our Lights of Love star! Walker was born in April 2023 with Down Syndrome. What followed was a whirlwind of medical battles including laryngomalacia, aspiration, and previously undiagnosed heart defects. During his 52 days in the NICU, Walker underwent two surgeries and would need open heart surgery in Charleston at MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital. His parents stayed at RMHC Charleston during this challenging time.

“In those dark days, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Charleston was our beacon of light. They offered us a warm, welcoming place to rest, shower, and enjoy hot meals, just steps from the hospital. This support allowed us to focus entirely on Walker’s recovery without the added stress of where we would sleep or what we would eat.” – John and Laura

Today, Walker is thriving! He is reaching milestones and growing stronger every day. He just completed his first Buddy Walk, an event celebrating individuals with Down Syndrome, promoting inclusion and awareness.
