The Gray Family

The Gray family traveled to RMHC Charleston from Jamaica when their daughter, Sanaleah, needed open-heart surgery. They called RMHC Charleston their “Home-away-from-home” for 99 days while she received treatment at MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital.

When Sanaleah was born with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome — a congenital heart defect in which the left side of her heart was not fully developed — doctors told her family she would need to undergo a series of open-heart surgeries. She underwent her first surgery at just 4 days old.

As Sanaleah’s mother said, “It has been a roller coaster ride with lots of tears, but being at RMHC Charleston feels like home. We have gotten a family here at the House and that leaves us with a warm feeling inside that we have people caring for us while we are unable to be with our family back in Jamaica.”

After nearly three months at our House, the Gray family is enjoying their time together back home in Jamaica. Sanaleah is doing very well and will celebrate her first birthday this August!
